"All-American Comics #16" 1940
The Green Lantern is a very popular and pretty well known and recognizable DC character. The Green Lantern was created by Bill Finger and Martin Nodell, and debuted in 1940 in "All-American Comics #16." The original identity of the Green Lantern was Alan Scott, but most people probably know the Green Lantern as Hal Jordan, who didn't come around until 1959. Actually, to simply call this character "The" Green Lantern would be incorrect. There is actually an intergalactic peace force known as the Green Lantern Corps. Each officer is assigned a section of the universe to protect. So Alan Scott and Hal Jordan were actually just Earth's Green Lanterns. The Green Lanterns get their powers from their rings of power, which must be charged by their lantern. Green is the color of willpower, which is the force the Green Lanterns wield, hence the name "Green Lanterns."
Green Lantern Oath:
"In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!!!"
